Bubba Brothers on Groove, Growth, and Going Solo [Interview]

Meet Bubba Brothers, the singular sonic architect with a name that suggests a duo but delivers a force all his own. Known for fusing live vocals with infectious club energy, he’s back with Groove’, a bold collaboration with Rui Pregal da Cunha, legendary frontman of Heróis do Mar. This latest release on ossdeb Sounds blurs the lines between rock nostalgia and electronic futurism, continuing the evolution sparked by his standout track Sinners. With sunlit swagger and dancefloor drive, ‘Groove’ is more than a summer anthem—it’s a statement.

First of all, congratulations on your new release, ‘Groove’. How did the collaboration with Rui Pregal da Cunha come about, and what was it like to work with such an iconic voice?
Thank you! Collaborating with Rui was an incredible experience. His voice carries a timeless presence, and bringing it into an electronic context was something I’ve dreamed of. The blend of our sounds just clicked — it felt natural and powerful from the first session.

‘Groove’ feels like a summer anthem — rich in energy and emotion. What inspired the track sonically and thematically?
The idea was to create a track that captures the uplifting spirit of summer but with depth — not just beats, but a story. Thematically, it’s about fusion — of styles, of generations, of rock and electronic energy. I wanted something both danceable and emotionally resonant.

This is the first release since Bubba Brothers became a solo project. How has that transition influenced your creative process?
It’s been liberating in many ways. I still carry the legacy of what Bubba Brothers was, but now I can dive deeper into my personal vision. Every decision, eve
ry sound, feels more personal and intentional. It’s a new chapter, and ‘Groove’ reflects that shift perfectly.

Vocals play a key role in ‘Groove’. Is this a direction you plan to explore more going forward — working with singers and live elements?
Absolutely. ‘Sinners’ already hinted at this hybrid direction, and ‘Groove’ takes it further. Collaborating with vocalists opens up emotional dimensions that instrumental tracks sometimes can’t reach. Expect more of this in the future — I’m definitely embracing it.

With ‘Groove’ being part of Mossdeb Sounds’ Portuguese vocalist series, do you see yourself continuing to work within this national context?
Yes, Portuguese music and voices are incredibly rich and often underrepresented in electronic music. Being part of this series is a way to celebrate that, and I hope to keep blending local influences with global sounds.

You’ve played hybrid shows in the past. Can fans expect more live-vocal sets in upcoming performances?
Definitely. The goal is always to create an immersive experience. Combining DJing with live vocals and instruments adds a layer of unpredictability and connection. ‘Groove’ is a perfect track for that format — it comes alive differently on stage.

Finally, what’s next for Bubba Brothers? Any teasers you can share about upcoming projects or gigs?
There’s a lot brewing — new collabs, new singles, and a few surprises. I’m also working on a concept live show that fuses visuals, live elements, and DJing in a way I’ve never done before. This solo chapter is just getting started.
